“Inspection does not improve the quality, nor guarantee quality. Inspection is too late. The quality, good or bad, is already in the product.” – Harold F. Dodge. Having been in charge of game quality assurance over the years, trying to catch and fix localization problems downstream has proven to be too costly. The least problematic method that I’ve found thus far is to solve problems BEFORE they occur, and that is to lay strong localization foundations upstream to ensure at the very least accuracy, consistency, and context, before the translations spiral out of control and become unmanageable. We will explore what it means to shift translation quality to upstream, the incredible benefits of building in quality since the beginning of the localization process, the severe problems that can be encountered down stream and the time and workload that can be saved by avoiding them. Real life examples will be provided.
